TRAINER SPOTLIGHT: JULIA

Posted on: April 9th, 2018 by CityRow

This week we’re turning our Trainer Spotlight on Julia!

I’m originally from…
…all over! I moved around the US and western Europe until I reached high school. Since then, I call Austin, TX home.

I came to New York for/because…
I was working toward my masters at NYU. I compose musicals and am currently finishing up work on my first novel.

I got into fitness because…
Growing up as a gymnast, I became obsessed with training and programming throughout college and grad school. I broke into group fitness teaching indoor cycling, barre technique, and interval running, finally certifying as a personal trainer. I am fascinated by the intricacies of the human body and love the creativity and freedom involved in working with individuals.

I came to teach at CITYROW because…
It’s easy to feel stimulated when I am learning, and I had a lot to learn when it came to rowing! I brought my teaching experience, but I wanted to master the rower and empower others to do the same.

I love rowing because…
Rowing is EFFICIENT! Nothing builds cardio strength and muscular power like pushing from catch to drive… over and over and over.

My teaching style is…
Music-driven: I jive off of a perfectly curated playlist and let you know that the stakes are as high as you make them. If you’re coming in to try something new, I’m here to educate you and make you feel comfortable. If you’re coming in to PR, I will push you to your max. Whatever your needs, I’ve got you covered.

You should take my class because…
You will get one-on-one attention and up your game. I know how to help you hit your goals and surprise yourself. Every damn time.

My music is…
I try to play a little bit of everything from hip hop to Top 40 remixes, throwbacks to new music from around the world. It is always, ALWAYS energized from the first beat drop.

CITYROW has changed me…
For the better. I am currently training for my first distance race. I set out with some majorly ambitious speed goals, and quite honestly, I attribute much of my increase in speed and power to the work I put in on rower.

If I could have one celebrity take my class it would be…
I would love to stack a class with superhuman athletes from different disciplines who have never rowed before. It’s always fun to see the surprise on people’s faces when it hits them that rowing is totally different and challenging!

I fuel up before and after class with…
Before class? Fruit and water. A quick burst of natural sugar gives me enough energy to flip into beast mode. After? Something with a blast of protein for a speedy recovery (I’m vegetarian, so I do a lot of pea proteins and dark, leafy greens). And of course, more water. Always.

When I’m not teaching, you can find me…
Traveling, on a bike, on a run, writing, drinking dumb amounts of coffee, and playing with my dog, Max, who is a perfect creature.
