TRAINER SPOTLIGHT: SHEA

Posted on: July 16th, 2017 by CityRow

This week we’re turning our Trainer Spotlight on Shea!

I’m originally from…
Scottsdale, Arizona

I came to New York for/because…
I was transitioning out of professional ballet into teaching fitness. You can teach fitness anywhere so my options were endless. Who wouldn’t want to live in New York?!

I got into fitness because…
I was previously a professional ballerina with Oregon Ballet Theatre. Ballet is all I have ever known! It was my career and my passion since the age of 2. Cross training is a huge aspect of every ballerina’s career and I had always felt a connection to Pilates. I decided to persue my certification without much intent on using it, but more to gain personal knowledge. By the end of training, I realized I LOVED teaching. The more I instructed, the more passionate I felt about helping people reach their fitness goals, whatever those might be. Ballet doesn’t always feel like you’re making a difference in your audiences’ lives. Teaching fitness, I feel so fulfilled each and every class. Making connections with clients, pushing them past what they thought they could do, and most importantly, making you sweat is what I love!

I came to teach at CITYROW because…
I met Trevor Hennigan (another brilliant CITYROW instructor) in Portland at the Pilates studio. We instantly became the best of friends and always joked about living together and one day opening a fitness studio. He moved to New York and told me about this incredible studio called CityRow. When I came to visit, I took his class every day of my stay. Being honest, I hated my first class. The machine wasn’t doing what I wanted, and I despise things I’m not good at. After my third class, I was addicted. A few months after that visit, I made the decision to move to the city and knew I had to do everything I could to teach at CITYROW. The workout is so unique and every single member of the CITYROW team is incredible.

I love rowing because…
Anyone can do it. Most people, including myself, didn’t grow up rowing. When you walk into the room it’s a fairly level playing field. If you’re pregnant, you’re inJured, you never work out, you can still row. It’s all about technique and how hard you’re willing to push yourself. Rowing never gets easier because the better you get, the more you can push past your own limits.

My teaching style is…
Deceiving. I might look nice and sweet but once we get on that machine, I’m all business. If business also includes some occasional dance moves and wacky one liners.

You should take my class because…
To put it simply, I will make you work! We all have goals going into a fitness class and I want to help you reach those. I am a stickler for technique, rhythm, and form, but that is what makes us better. I want nothing more than to see you improve and grow in some capacity. I’m not trying to change your life, it’s JUST fitness. But if I can make you feel empowered for 50 minutes, more confident in that pair of jeans, or even just make you sweaty and smiling, then I did my job.

My music is…
Music is HUGE. You can expect everything from bass bumping rap, to powerful lady ballads, to that remix you will have stuck in your head the rest of the day. My playlists will never be exclusively Top 40 pop hits, but I can guarantee each song will push you through class. I love nothing more than a good musical cue. When we finish a round of mat work and the song comes to a close, or we start a big push and a new song begins simultaneously, I am literally overjoyed. If I could have a DJ in the room syncing the music with my cues at all times, it would be a dream come true.

CITYROW has changed me…
CITYROW has made every muscle more defined. Ballet obviously had me in good shape, but I found myself feeling stronger with each class. I was able to grab heavier weights time and time again. I’ll see shoulder and back muscles popping out that I didn’t even know I had! Plus, rowing makes your butt look great. 😉

If I could have one celebrity take my class it would be…
If any of the Real Housewives of New York took my class I honestly don’t think I could function. I couldn’t tell you why, it’s a strange obsession. Don’t judge me for my trashy tv choices!

I fuel up before and after class with…
You will never find me without an iced coffee in one hand and a banana in the other.

When I’m not teaching, you can find me…
Taking class at CITYROW, SLT, or another fitness studio around town, shopping, probably for shoes, (it’s an addiction), watching horribly trashy tv (see above answer about the Real Housewives), or eating endless bowls of popcorn with Trevor in our apartment.
